What is hypnosis and how does it work?

Hypnosis is a valuable tool to help you achieve your goals. Hypnosis is NOT: sleep, a trance, being unconscious, a truth serum, you will not be stuck in hypnosis, and you not do anything that is against your own will. Hypnosis is a altered state of consciousness where the subconscious mind is in a hyper state of suggestibility. During hypnosis the hypnotists is delivering positive suggestions to the subconscious level of the mind. The key to your success is: " the desire for positive change and the commitment to make that change" by listening to positive suggestions.

How can I tell the qualifications of a Hypnotist?

Check their credentials.  If they are not eligible to be a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnotists, CSCH then they are not academically trained, but rather may have had only 40 hours of training and no background in mental health.  In order to be a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnotists one is required to have an "MD., DDS, PhD, Master's Degree in Nursing, Master's Degree in Psychology.

Hypnosis is a wonderful tool to treat the SYMPTOMS, such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, phobias, etc., but Hypnosis is an adjunct to psychotherapy and does not treat the causes.

What to makes me different from other counsellors?

I combine and blend of Positive Psychology, which is a based field of study that involves the research of meaning, happiness, and the "Good life".  It has roots in Humanistic Psychology, which derives, in part, from the thinking of Plat and Aristotle. As a Positive Psychology and EMDR Clinician, my passion is contributing to the lives of my clients by discovering what they need in order to move forward.  The combination of EMDR and Positive Psychology is a dynamic duo. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) with Clinical Hypnosis or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  The combination of CBT, Hypnosis, and EMDR help you move through the difficult periods quickly allowing you to focus on a greater self-attunement and awareness.  You will learn the skill to deal with and manage your emotions whether you are dealing with anxiety, life, transitions, grief, depression or relationship issues.

What is Clinical Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness achieved by the narrowing of attention  by focusing concentration and is a completely natural process.  We all do it all the time, for example, driving automatically while being preoccupied about something else.

What is EMDR and what kind of problems can EMDR treat?

Scientific research has established EMDR as effective for post traumatic stress.  However, clinicians also have reported success using EMDR in treatment of the following conditions: Panic attacks, complicated grief, Disturbing memories, Phobias, Performance anxiety, Stress reduction, Sexual and/or Physical abuse.

Explanation of EMDR for Patients

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a procedure used in psychotherapy to help you reduce the impact of experiences from the past that intrude on your present-day life. Usually, these experiences from the past involve a trauma such as assault, abused, and accident or a natural disaster. Even though the trauma may have happened many months or even years ago, you still feel its impact in your daily life through posttraumatic symptoms such as intrusive memories, emotional flooding, nightmares, anxiety, numbing, low self-esteem, and difficulty getting on with your life EMDR has also been used to help people; deal with anxiety and panic, grief, reactions to physical illness, and many other conditions where strong emotions are associated with life experiences.

Couples Therapy

In my clinical practice with couples, I use Gottman's Couples therapy, which is an empirically researched approach that is designed to help teach you and your partner specific tools to deepen friendship and intimacy in your relationship.  This therapeutic approach will help you and your partner productively manage conflicts. You will be given methods to manage "resolvable problems" and dialogued about "gridlock" (or perpetual) issues.  Together we will work to help you appreciate your relationship's strengths and to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.
